With a rising global incidence of bladder and prostate
pathologies, cystoscopies are now a standard procedure performed for a larger proportion of the population. Advances in information
technology have led to a shift in how people access information, with increased use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI). We
aimed to evaluate the quality and readability of traditional websites and GAI-generated leaflets as resources for patients and
caregivers seeking information about cystoscopies.
Materials & Methods
The top 20 results from four search terms across three search engines—Google, Yahoo, and Bing-were collated, with duplicates
excluded. Prompts were entered into GAI platforms, including ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek, to produce patient information
leaflets. These sources were then assessed by two authors for quality using the DISCERN and JAMA Benchmark scores, and for
readability using the Flesch Reading Ease Score (FRES) and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL). Additionally, ChatGPT was
asked to evaluate the quality of both websites and GAI leaflets using the DISCERN score.
Results
81 websites were included after appropriate exclusions. The DISCERN scores were 50.8 (±7.89) and 52.7 (±5.03); the JAMA
Benchmark was 2.19 (±1.21) and 1 (±0); FRES was 56.3 (±9.31) and 54.3 (±9.82); and FKGL was 8.21 (±1.71) and 8.5 (±1.39) for
websites and GAI leaflets, respectively. Comparisons between websites and GAI leaflets showed no significant differences in
DISCERN scores (p=0.653), JAMA Benchmark (p=0.0574), FRES (p=0.729), and FKGL (p=0.627). A Wilcoxon Signed Rank test
revealed significant differences between the author and GAI-reported DISCERN scores (p<0.0001).

Conclusions
As demand for bedside cystoscopies increases, the information provided before and after the procedure must be of high quality and
easy to understand. Our study reveals shortcomings in both the quality and readability of online resources and GAI leaflets. To help
patients better understand the procedure and handle post-procedural side effects, organisations and individuals need to improve the
quality and clarity of the available information. This will enable patients to cope more effectively and enhance the physician-patient
relationship.

Introduction & Objectives Cystoscopy is routinely used for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.
