Introduction: Shockwave Lithotripsy (SWL) is a non-invasive procedure used to remove stones, primarily for small, uncomplicated urinary stones, as kidney stone cases rise. As patient numbers increase, online information must be high-quality and understandable. We evaluated the quality and readability of SWL online info and compared it with leaflets produced by Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI).<\/p>\n
Methods: The top 20 search results for four SWL-related terms on Google, Yahoo, and Bing were collected, excluding duplicates. GAI platforms, ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek, produced a patient leaflet. Two authors assessed quality using DISCERN and JAMA scores, and readability using FRES and FKGL. ChatGPT later evaluated the GAI-produced information with DISCERN.<\/p>\n
Results: 68 websites were included. The quality assessments showed average websites with GAI-leaflet DISCERN scores of 52.4 (\u00b18.91) and 58.7 (\u00b15.03), JAMA Benchmark scores of 2.22 (\u00b11.10) and 1 (\u00b10), FRES scores of 52.1 (\u00b113.8) and 51.5 (\u00b18.05), and FKGL scores of 9.04 (\u00b12.36) and 8.93 (\u00b11.10). No significant differences were seen in DISCERN (p=0.224), FRES (p=0.652), and FKGL (p=0.866), but differences in JAMA scores were significant (p=0.0298). A significant difference was also noted in DISCERN scores between authors and ChatGPT (p<0.0001).<\/p>\n
Conclusion: There is a lack of high-quality SWL information meeting global readability standards. As more people use GAI resources trained on online data, improving the quality of these resources for patients and carers is vital.
